Kodak Retina IIIS (027)

Quite a large unit by modern standards, this interchangeable-lens rangefinder camera has the Schneider Xenar f/2.8 lens fitted, though an f/1.9 lens was available. Alternative lenses of 35mm, 85mm and 135mm, with corresponding automatically switched parallax-corrected brightlines in the viewfinder, make this a very flexible camera. There was a separate viewfinder available for the 28mm 'S'-series lens, introduced with the Retina Reflex III, which will also function on this model. Comparasion of the viewfinder image in a Retina Reflex III with the 28mm lens fitted and the total viewfinder image of the Retina IIIS, outside of the brightlines, would indicate that a good approximation is achieved, so the separate viewfinder may not be strictly necessary. It might be of interest to note that lenses produced especially for the Instamatic Reflex will not fit on this camera, as there is no rangefinder coupling on these later lenses. The meter is coupled from the shutter housing by a piece of string and a system of pulleys, I know because I had to replace the string on this one!
