Where most "conventional" or modern cameras have a shutter-button which, once pressed for an exposure, then returns to its initial position when released, many early cameras, especially of a more basic specification, featured a shutter control which was pushed one way for the first exposure and then the other way for the next ... hence the term flip-flop shutter.
These shutters can be found on many box cameras and some folding cameras.
